China’s Tropical Island Plans Medical Tourism Zone

The island province of Hainan has published a plan to build China’s first special zone for medical tourism, an official said on Saturday at the Boao Forum for Asia.

Under the plan, the Boao Lecheng International Medical Travel Zone will be located near Qionghai City and Boao Town, covering an area of about 20 square km, said Zhu Huayou, vice head of Hainan’s development and reform commission.

The southern part of the zone will feature health care centers for the elderly, patients with chronic disease and those in poor health, while the northern part will focus on medical treatment and research, Zhu said.

Medical tourism, which combines travel with leisure and healthcare, is already popular in some Asian countries like Singapore and India, and it is likely to boom in China thanks to rising living standards.

The zone in Hainan will make use of traditional Chinese medicine, the local tropical climate and world-class medical institutions the island aims to introduce, according to Zhu.

The official said that overseas medical institutions will be allowed to set up business within the zone. Other preferential policies will include lower taxes for imported medical instruments and medicines, and frontier medical programs like stem cell research will be allowed.

Construction of the zone is likely to cost up to 100 billion yuan (roughly 16 billion U.S. dollars).

The tropical island province, with its sun, sea and sand, is striving to build itself into an internationally famed travel destination.

According to the provincial statistics bureau, visitors to the island exceeded 33 million in 2012, with travel revenues hitting 37.9 billion yuan.

MYMEDholiday.com adds Msia to its list of healthcare destinations

New Delhi :
Malaysia is now listed as a medical tourism destination on MyMEDholiday.com, a portal that provides a robust bundle of features to anyone considering a trip overseas for healthcare.
The comprehensive medical tourism portal and ratings site with offices in San Francisco and Bangkok has detailed profiles of over 400 healthcare providers in Asian countries known for their advanced medical care centres such as Thailand, India, Singapore, and now, Malaysia.
In addition to the profiles of various doctors, hospitals and clinics spanning all fields of medicine, the site includes an interactive tool with which patients can access facilities directly, said a statement.
Information pertaining to the countries represented on the site can be accessed easily through a drop-down tab called, appropriately, “Destinations”.
There is also a brief summary of each country’s medical tourism capabilities, a synopsis of the overall healthcare system there and listings of the most popular cities for medical tourism.
One high-ranking member of the company’s Asian-operations team says, “Asian countries such as Singapore, India and Thailand have established themselves as heavyweights in the multi-billion dollar health and medical tourism market by offering patients from abroad the chance to receive convenient, high-quality, and affordable healthcare that they can’t get at home.
“At this point in time, it makes sense to include Malaysia as it starts to emerge as a serious player as well.”
The “Destinations” page featuring myMEDholiday.com’s newest location includes a summary touting Malaysia’s new-found prominence as a medical tourism haven and its new and internationally-recognised hospitals and clinics.
It also contains information on the highly qualified doctors and specialists who practise there, and looks at some of Malaysia’s better-known fields of expertise such as cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, infertility treatment and reconstructive surgery.
It also cites Malaysia’s reputation as a premier vacation destination due to the balmy tropical climate and warm hospitality.
Like the other Asian leaders, Malaysia claims to satisfy both halves of the healthcare travel equation with a successful “medical” infrastructure and a thriving “tourism” industry.
Each facility listed in the medical travel “Destinations” pages is qualified and up-to-date with the latest in healthcare technology and trends, and has met myMEDholiday.com’s strict membership criteria before having their profiles listed free of charge, said the statement. – BERNAMA

The Asia Medical Travel Council and the Thai Medical Tourism Association Announce Strategic Alliance by the Signing of a Memorandum of Understanding

A momentous milestone has been reached with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Asia Medical Travel Council (AMTRAC) and the Thai Medical Tourism Association (TMTA).

Bangkok, Thailand :

The Asia Medical Travel Council (“AMTRAC”) today welcomes the Thai Medical Tourism Association (“TMTA”) into its ranks as a pioneer founding member. TMTA will make up one of five of the AMTRAC regional bloc members, the first bloc of its kind in the world, which would in time consist of four other prominent Asian countries that have demonstrated great strides towards the advancement of the medical travel industry backed by internationally accredited medical institutions and highly qualified medical specialists.

AMTRAC’s vision is to ultimately show the world that its member countries are able to offer safe and affordable medical treatment comparable to the best in the west and collectively raise the visibility of Asian medical travel destinations in an increasingly crowded medical travel market.

Ultimately, this collaborative network can only spell good news for the patient as the medical travel bloc will collectively look to allay patient concerns by discussing and addressing important and pertinent issues such as patient safety, continuity of care, standardisation of medical records, to name a few.

Founder of AMTRAC, Mr. Wilson Tan said: “This truly marks an exciting time for Asia in the medical travel space. TMTA will be a valuable member of AMTRAC as the other AMTRAC members can learn how it has succeeded in achieving the right balance of medical skills and expertise blended with its legendary Thai hospitality to succeed in promoting Thailand as a premiere medical travel destination to the rest of the world. Our two organisations have a great deal in common in our values, work ethics and vision to see Asia grow as a medical travel hub. We are proud to be able to count TMTA amongst the pioneer founding members of AMTRAC.”

The objectives of this Pan-Asian alliance are:
· To aid AMTRAC members to become recognized as top medical travel destinations.
· To help raise professional standard of medical specialists and healthcare providers.
· To provide a single platform for medical facilitators to learn, update and network with other member service providers.
· To develop a higher degree of patient confidence and awareness in medical practitioners and facilities in the Asian region.
· To facilitate a forum for the exchange of views on topical issues facing the medical travel industry in Asia.
· To achieve global recognition as the #1 medical travel event in Asia by organizing annual AMTRAC Conference & Exhibitions (1-stop shop for medical travel in Asia).
· Lastly, but not the least, to develop active corporate social responsibility and charity programs that gives back to the community.

Presiding over this momentous signing of the MoU ceremony are President of the TMTA, Dr. med Prapa Wongphaet and Founder of AMTRAC, Mr. Wilson Tan. This alliance merely marks the start of what many hope would be the driving force behind the betterment of the medical travel industry in Asia.

Internationally recognized as the front runners in the medical travel arena within the region, AMTRAC is working to include India, Malaysia, South Korea and Singapore as the remaining four founding members. Shortly after, this will be followed by an official launch ceremony in the second half of 2013.
