Many peoples’ first thought when they think of health or medical tourism is “scary”, and while some medical destinations may be out of some peoples’ comfort zones the one common post-trip comment tends to be, “I wish I hadn’t waited so long!”

There are three reasons that I can think of for people delaying a knee replacement surgery, hip replacement surgery, or other orthopedic procedure – sometimes 4 years or more and they are financial, awareness of health tourism options, and fear of the destination or unknown.

In terms of finances, orthopedic procedures like knee or hip replacement surgery can be up to 80% less than the cost of the procedure in the U.S. (and that includes travel and accommodation), and yet they’re still not dirt cheap. That said you need balance the cost of the procedure against the quality of your life. Is your pain preventing you from enjoying the things that are important to you, like golf, spending time with children or grandchildren? There are ways to fund a medical trip, and if your destination of choice is New Zealand then MyMedicalLoans.com is one of those financial aid organizations.

Health tourism awareness is slowly being remedied, with publications like Health Tourism Magazine and sites like MyOrthopedicOptions.com. And of course with Google indexing the universe, a good search on procedures and medical or health tourism options should provide you with enough information to keep you busy.

In terms of fear, well there are definitely some destinations that could be a shock culturally speaking. Hip or knee replacement surgery and other orthopedic procedures are scary enough at home, let along halfway around the world in a country so different from your own. There are several tips to finding the right health tourism destination and making the process smooth and less scary.

Research and select an appropriate destination

If you’re considering health tourism, you’ll want to spend some time researching what country you should visit. Depending on the orthopedic procedure you’re having done, you could be in that country for 3 weeks – potentially longer – undergoing rehabilitation, so you’ll want to be sure you’re comfortable and safe. Consider other factors, such as customs, the language they speak, hygienic practices, ease of transportation, and even something as simple as the food they eat.

Get patient testimonials

When you select your destination and facility, be sure to insist on previous patient testimonials. If you can, even ask to speak in person to a patient to really understand the experience they had. These people are the ones that will tell you exactly what the process was like – they aren’t getting paid!

Select a facilitator or coordinator you can trust

Most health tourism organizations will assign one person to help you with the process. This coordinator will ensure you get a visa, airline tickets and transfers, help arrange accommodations after your surgery, and help schedule all the visits needed along the way. The more comfortable you are with this person, and the more you can trust your medical coordinator, the easier the whole experience will be.

Take someone with you

As I mentioned earlier, you probably will be in your host country for several weeks, so having a companion along with you is a great way to feel better faster. Surgery is never fun, so having a travel companion can make is easier to deal with.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Employers Make Savings With Medical Tourism

Medical tourism is also known as medial travel, health tourism, or global healthcare – and this raft of names for the same phenomenon is a testament to the fact that the concept is gaining in acceptance and popularity. Health costs have long been a burden in the US and Europe, especially in countries without socialized healthcare. Now, medical tourism is starting to become institutionalized enough for employers to realized and systematize its benefits.

American employer-sponsored premiums for health insurance companies have exploded in the last six years, showing an increase in cost of up to 87%. It has been estimated that medical treatment or health insurance costs the average American family ,500 per year, and workers spend nearly 00 out of pocket on health expenses. This has led to the phenomenon of medical tourism.

Of all of the reasons for medical tourism, the price differential is listed as the most important one by patients. Costs can be as little as one-tenth of similar procedures in Western countries, especially for elective procedures which have complicated rules for claiming with health insurers. For example, hip replacement surgery can cost around US,000 in the United States. This may be needed in response to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or osteoporosis. A hospital in India will perform the procedure for only US,000, and due to much lower cost of living in Asian countries, the extras of flights and accommodation go nowhere near covering that price shortfall.

Heart disease is another expensive condition in the US. Diagnostic procedures alone, like angiography, can cost up to US,000, even in populated states with large hospitals like California. The lowest cost for this procedure was ,400 in Maryland, at the time of the research by Metropolitan Life. This procedure costs just US0 at Bangkok Hospital, a Thai international hospital.

The concerns that patients may have about skill levels in foreign hospitals have been allayed in many cases by the Joint Commission in the US, which accredits American hospitals. Overseas institutions can apply to be accredited by the Joint Commission International, and the organization has around 100 foreign hospitals on its list, including Bangkok Hospital and Bumrungrad, two international Thai hospitals, as well as five Indian and 11 Singaporean hospitals. Many of these facilities have English speaking doctors, signage, information, nurses and technical staff, so Westerners can feel at home.

Several companies in the US are also institutionalizing medical tourism. United Group Programs in Florida sells self-insurance policies to small businesses; they recently initiated a plan to send patients to Bumrungrad, a center of Thailand health care, for expensive procedures. Patients also stay closer to home for medical procedures, with employers Blue Shield and Health Net, both in California, offering policies that allow members to receive treatment in Mexico.

Another, less publicized benefit of medical tourism is the standard of service found in international hospitals in Thailand, India and Singapore, as well as other medical tourism countries. Registered nurses are hard to come by in Western countries, where the profession is sometimes seen as less than desirable. They abound in Asian countries, though, meaning that when you ask a question or for help, your respondent is a qualified and trained healthcare professional, rather than an orderly.

These, as well as the many other benefits of medical tourism, (including service standards, hospital facilities, and the ability to combine health and pleasure), should see the trend towards medical tourism continue to grow.

Satori World Medical Partners with ICSVEBA as Medical Travel Facilitator

SAN DIEGO – Nov. 15, 2010 – Imperial County Schools Voluntary Employees Benefits Association (ICSVEBA), which has a long-standing record of proactively managing medical cost inflation, has partnered with Satori World Medical for its global health care program.
ICSVEBA – a federally qualified employee benefits trust that represents twelve school districts – unifies plan designs, shares loss experience, and selects benefits vendors and programs that result in improving benefit levels and holding rate adjustments well below the national average. To continue this trend in offering employee benefits at a low cost, ICSVEBA now offers medical travel, also known as medical tourism or global health care, through Satori World Medical as an option to its members, which can result in 40-80 percent cost savings per procedure.
“Some of the members of the ICSVEBA live in rural communities and may have limited options in health care,” said Jack Phelps, plan benefits consultant, HUB International. “By offering medical travel through Satori World Medical, our members can have access to some of the best hospitals and doctors in the world at a substantial savings over the cost for the same procedure done in the United States.”
Satori World Medical will provide the ICSVEBA members and their dependents with a full service medical travel program. Under the program specialized surgical procedures, such as orthopedic, cardiac, bariatric, cosmetic, and major dental work can be performed.
“Adding medical travel through Satori World Medical to an existing health plan can be done at any time of the year, at no out-of-pocket cost to employees or per-employee-per-month cost to the employers,” said Steven Lash, president and CEO, Satori World Medical. “Choosing Satori World Medical for medical procedures is now a choice that employees can make for their medical care.”
“By adding international travel as a medical benefit, it enhances the members’ ability to travel internationally to manage their health care,” said Phelps. “Including Satori’s international centers of excellence and concierge medical travel program to our benefits plan was a natural next step.
“Satori is at the forefront of the medial travel industry setting benchmarks for excellence in the service and care it provides to its patients. We have already had a number of our members express interest in this service.”
Satori World Medical has done extensive due diligence on hospitals and physicians to find the best the world has to offer. Its network features hospitals that meet or exceed U.S. standards of care, are accredited and Satori regularly monitors performance measures on the quality of care delivered.
